Portland Volunteer Resource

"Nearly everything you do is of no importance, but it is important that you do it."

~~~I'm going to provide, below, opportunities for you to do something, or several somethings
that will be greatly important in taking us closer to our goal of electing a legislature that supports
education and working families, and to prevent the passage two measures that will have devastating
effects on Oregon's ability to provide that education, to maintain our infrastructure, and to care for our
families in need.  My second email (Monday) will look at legislative candidates and their history of
supporting issues important to working people and educators, in case you haven't made up your mind
yet about whom to support with your vote.
First, I'd invite you to take a moment and read a Washington Post editorial from earlier this month which,
as is pointed out by AFT in their weekly newsletter, does a great job advocating for increased support for
education, as a well-educated population becomes increasingly important to our state and our nation.  In
Oregon we need a legislature that is willing to do that, unshackled by draconian restrictions on resources;
 restriction financed by out-of-state millionaires who have goals for Oregon very different from those of
working families.  Please join me in voting, volunteering, and contributing--there is still plenty of time to
do all (keeping in mind that the sooner you vote, the sooner you are removed from the "call lists"...)
POST EDITORIAL GETS IT RIGHT ON INVESTMENTS IN EDUCATION (AFT Electronic Newsletter, Oct 23)
Check out the Washington Post editorial on making the right investments in education. The editorial,
"Globalization and Schools," notes that because of technology and globalization, the advantages of
getting a college degree have become greater than ever--but too many students are still missing out.
College graduates today are now earning much more, proportionately, than high school graduates,
 compared with college graduates in 1979. This has contributed to the growth of inequality over the past
generation, "so any serious response to inequality must make access to college broader and fairer."
One obvious choice is greater investment in quality early childhood education. Other effective investments
include smaller class sizes and publicly funded summer school.
And here are opportunities to volunteer with AFT.  Phoning always has food and friends, and is warm and dry.
 Canvassing is great exercise, also done with friends.  Both involve contacting fellow union members, and lots
 of supportive conversations.  In 16 days we'll know if our efforts have been successful.  I hope we will all be
 excited about a new, pro-education, pro-working family legislature, and our own efforts in making it happen.
Thanks,
